Quiz Averages: Keep the Scale Honest
A quiz average answers one narrow question: if every listed score counts the same, what mean appears? This guide explains equal-weight averaging, common syllabus traps, and when you need a weighted grade tool instead.
What an Equal-Weight Average Actually Answers
Sum the scores you intend to include, then divide by how many you included. That is the entire model. It does not drop lows, apply category weights, or convert letter grades unless you do that work first.
Match one numeric scale
Mixing a 0–10 check with a 0–100 unit test without conversion produces a meaningless mean. Convert first, then average.
Dropped Scores and Extra Credit
If the syllabus drops the lowest quiz, remove that score from the list before averaging. If extra credit is optional and uncapped, decide whether it belongs in the same mean or in a separate category—do not invent hidden weights.
