Balancing Equations Starts With Correct Formulas
Stoichiometric balancing is bookkeeping for atoms. Coefficients change how many formula units appear; they do not rewrite the formulas themselves. This guide separates atom math from chemical feasibility.
Coefficients vs Subscripts
Subscripts belong to the formula (H2O has two hydrogen atoms in one molecule). Coefficients sit in front (2H2O means two water molecules). Never “balance” by editing subscripts.
Conservation Equations
For every element, atoms on the reactant side must equal atoms on the product side after coefficients are applied. Solving that linear system yields the smallest positive integers used in classroom stoichiometry.
Balance is necessary, not sufficient
An equation can conserve atoms and still be unsafe, impossible under given conditions, or missing required species. Treat balancing as arithmetic on the skeleton you typed.
