EV Charging Cost vs Gasoline Calculator
Multiplies monthly miles by kWh per mile and electricity rate for charging cost, then compares with gasoline cost from MPG and price per gallon.
Limitation: Educational comparison only.
How to Estimate EV Charging Cost
Enter monthly driving, EV efficiency, electricity rate, and optional gasoline comparison inputs.
Choose a display currency; no conversion occurs.
Home rate vs public charging
Public DC fast charging often costs more than home overnight rates. Use the rate that matches the scenario you want to study.
What Charging Cost Means
Monthly kWh multiplies miles by kWh per mile. Charging cost multiplies that energy by your rate. Gasoline cost and fuel savings appear only when ICE MPG is greater than zero. The model does not include maintenance, insurance, or purchase price differences.
EV Charging Cost Examples
Thousand-mile month
Entered driving assumptions
Charging vs gasoline
1,000 × 0.3 = 300 kWh; 300 × 0.15 = 45; 1,000 ÷ 25 × 3.5 = 140; savings = 95.
Lower-mileage scenario
Entered driving assumptions
Charging vs gasoline
800 × 0.25 = 200; 200 × 0.12 = 24; 800 ÷ 30 × 4 ≈ 106.67; savings ≈ 82.67.
Match units carefully
If you think in kWh per 100 miles, convert to kWh per mile before entering the efficiency field.

Formula
Monthly kWh
monthlyMiles × kwhPerMile
Monthly charging cost
monthlyKwh × electricityRatePerKwh
Monthly gasoline cost
monthlyMiles ÷ iceMilesPerGallon × gasolinePricePerGallon
Monthly fuel savings
monthlyGasolineCost − monthlyChargingCost
Scientific Background
Assumptions: constant efficiency and rates for the month. Limitations: weather, driving style, charging losses, and demand charges can change real costs.
