Running Pace Basics: From Finish Time to Clear Pace Math

A running pace worksheet is arithmetic on one known performance: distance and clock time become average pace and speed. Optionally, Riegel’s rule of thumb projects another distance. This guide is educational only—not a VO2max test, heat model, or coaching prescription.

What Pace Math Actually Answers

The useful question is 'What average pace and speed does this finish imply?' Projection asks a second question: 'If a simple endurance scaling law applies, what finish might another distance suggest?' Hills, heat, and fitness still change race day.

How the Worksheet Orders the Math

Worked Scenario

A 50-minute 10K is 3000 seconds over 10 km → 5:00 /km and 12 km/h. Projecting to a half marathon (21.0975 km) with exponent 1.06 yields about 6619 seconds (roughly 1:50:19) and about 5:14 /km—an estimate, not a guarantee.
