How to Estimate a Billable Rate

Use annual planning figures you believe are realistic for your practice.

1

Choose a display currency.

Billable ≠ worked

Admin, marketing, and unpaid time should reduce billable hours—not inflate them.

What the Billable Rate Means

Required revenue funds income plus expenses. Dividing by billable hours yields a pre-buffer rate; the buffer scales that rate up. Market willingness to pay is not modeled.

Freelance Rate Examples

Eighty thousand income target

Income, expenses, hours

annualTargetIncome:80000
annualBusinessExpenses:10000
billableHoursPerYear:1000
bufferPercent:20

Billable hourly rate

108 per billable hour

Revenue 90,000; 90/hour before buffer; ×1.20 = 108.

No buffer

Income, expenses, hours

annualTargetIncome:60000
annualBusinessExpenses:5000
billableHoursPerYear:1300
bufferPercent:0

Billable hourly rate

50 per billable hour

65,000 ÷ 1,300 = 50.

Separate tax planning

If you want tax reserves in the rate, put them in expenses or the buffer—do not expect this page to compute SE tax.
