Research increasingly shows that skeletal muscle acts as a metabolic organ that influences blood sugar regulation, fat metabolism, immune function, and even cognitive health. Understanding the importance of muscle mass and how to preserve it can fundamentally change how you approach fitness and aging.
The human body contains over 600 skeletal muscles that collectively account for approximately 40 percent of total body weight in healthy adults. These muscles are metabolically active tissue that burns calories around the clock, even during sleep. Each pound of muscle tissue burns roughly 6 calories per day at rest, compared to just 2 to 3 calories per pound of fat tissue. While this difference may seem small per pound, the cumulative impact across 50 to 80 pounds of total muscle mass is significant for daily energy expenditure.
One of the most concerning aspects of aging is sarcopenia, the progressive loss of muscle mass and strength. After the age of 30, adults typically lose 3 to 8 percent of their muscle mass per decade. Preserving and building muscle requires consistent resistance training performed at least two to three times per week. Adequate protein intake of at least 1.2 to 1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight provides the amino acid building blocks for muscle protein synthesis.
