Your Basal Metabolic Rate represents the number of calories your body burns at complete rest to maintain essential life functions. Breathing, blood circulation, brain activity, cellular repair, and temperature regulation all require energy around the clock. For most people, BMR accounts for 60 to 70 percent of total daily calorie expenditure, making it by far the largest component of your metabolic budget.

The two most widely used formulas for estimating BMR are the Harris-Benedict equation, originally developed in 1919, and the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, published in 1990. Modern research has shown that the Mifflin-St Jeor formula produces more accurate estimates for contemporary populations. It calculates BMR using weight, height, age, and sex. For men, the formula is 10 times weight in kilograms plus 6.25 times height in centimeters minus 5 times age in years plus 5. For women, the same calculation applies but with minus 161 instead of plus 5.

Several factors significantly influence your BMR. Body composition is the most impactful. Muscle tissue is metabolically expensive, burning approximately 6 calories per pound per day at rest. Fat tissue burns only 2 to 3 calories per pound. This means that two people of identical weight can have BMRs that differ by 200 to 400 calories depending on their muscle-to-fat ratio. This is precisely why strength training is recommended for long-term metabolic health.

Age causes a natural decline in BMR of approximately 2 to 3 percent per decade after the age of 20. However, research has shown that much of this decline is attributable to loss of muscle mass rather than an inevitable slowing of cellular metabolism. People who maintain or build muscle through regular resistance training can significantly attenuate the age-related metabolic decline.

Genetics account for roughly 20 percent of the variation in BMR between individuals. Thyroid hormones play a particularly important role, as they directly regulate the speed of cellular metabolism throughout the body. Hypothyroidism can reduce BMR significantly, while hyperthyroidism raises it. If you suspect your metabolism is unusually slow or fast despite appropriate diet and exercise, thyroid function testing may be warranted.

Understanding your BMR is foundational for any nutrition strategy. Your BMR represents the absolute minimum calorie intake needed for basic survival. Eating below your BMR for extended periods triggers aggressive metabolic adaptation, muscle loss, and hormonal disruption. For practical purposes, Total Daily Energy Expenditure, which adds activity calories to your BMR, is the more useful number for setting calorie targets. However, knowing your BMR helps you understand where your calories go and why crash diets that drop intake well below BMR are counterproductive.
